The Coincidence Clock, 2013

The Coincidence Clock is a sculptural instrument that combines geocentric and heliocentric models of the universe with charts of eclipses and other astronomical events to illustrate the time periods when coincidences occur.

The clock consists of four main components: the Day Dial, the Chime, the Month Wheel, and the Coincidence Zone. It relates to the 18.6-year cycle of eclipses as well as the path of the ecliptic, uniting both lunar motion (the Moon around the Earth) and solar motion (the Earth around the Sun) within a single geometric structure.

To ensure the mechanism operates smoothly, the Month Wheel—which also functions as the Zodiac Wheel—is constructed as a perfect circle. The Coincidence Clock’s Solstice and Equinox symbols invert after 26,000 Coincidence Clock years, marking the completion of one full Precession of the Equinoxes.

Below are a video and an animation that further describe the sculpture. To discuss the ongoing Coincidence Clock project, please email the artist.
